Mme. Tamara, Serial Killer of Husbands as Human Sacrifice, Greece - 1927

NOTE: Given that several sensational cases marked by "juicy" narratives like this one have been discredited (Renci, Szanyi, The Saint Lucretia Club) as journalistic hoaxes, this case must be considered questionable until the point when Greek sources are found.

FULL TEXT: Athens is much alarmed by the revelation of the exploits of a Russian woman named Mme. Tamara, but christened by the newspapers “Mme. Bluebeard.” The woman first appeared in Athens four years ago, announcing that she was a widow. She was devoutly religious, belonging to a peculiar Russian sect, and turned one of the rooms in her beautiful flat into a private chapel. She also installed a furnace for central heating, of greater size than seemed called for by the climate and the size of the flat.

After a year she married again – a prominent Chinese merchant, whom she converted to her faith. He was suddenly recalled to China – so Mme. Tamara declared – and in a subsequent letter, announced that he would not return. She then obtained a divorce under the easy system obtaining in Greece, and shortly after married another Chinaman, after similarly converting him to her own faith. Chinaman Number Two disappeared as quickly as his predecessor, and his wife could obtain no news from whatever.

Again, she won the heart of a Celestial, but this third man was already engaged to a woman of his own race, who became so incensed at the breach that she employed detectives to trace Chinaman Number Two, so that the Russian woman might not be left free to marry again.

Investigations, it is alleged, led to the discovery that the bodies of the Chinamen had been committed to the flames of the large central heating installation, after their throats had been cut while they slept.

Mme. Tamara was arrested, and the police investigations have revealed, it is stated, that the two murdered husbands whose fate has been traced, were only the last of a series.

The police are convinced that she was influenced by abnormal religious mania, as, according to the tenets of her sect, she had converted lost souls by offering them up as sacrifice.

EXCERPT (translated from German):

~ Tamara, the wife and Chinese killer. ~

After the tsarist empire collapsed, thousands and thousands of fleeing Russians flocked to Greece. Among them was a beautiful, interesting woman, Tamara, who settled in Athens. Tamara is a very educated woman, she traveled to the most elegant salons in the Greek capital and everyone admired the spirit and the strangely attractive beauty of the Russian woman. Victories also belonged to numerous religious organizations and religious sects, the aim of which was to find the way to eternal happiness through crime and sins; every act of misdeed means liberation and purification in the soul of these stray people.

Three years ago, Tamara married a Chinese merchant based in Athens, who soon disappeared without a trace. With tears in her eyes, the beautiful woman told everyone who wanted to hear it Gatte left her treacherously and returned to his distant home. She was able to get the authorities to marry her a second time, and, sadly, she shook hands with a Chinese man again and again. It was no secret, however, that Tamara, like in the first marriage, did not take loyalty exactly as in the second marriage and had numerous lovers. Suddenly the Russian's second husband had disappeared.

~ The revenge of the jealous. ~

Nobody became suspicious and Tamara started to apply for a rich Chinese merchant to marry. But this Chinese man had a mistress, and this, a strikingly beautiful Greek, did not want to leave the boyfriend to the Russian. There was an excited scene between the two women, the Chinese wanted to follow Tamara when the Greek took revenge by alerting the authorities to the mysterious disappearance of Tamara's two husbands.

Tamara was arrested. The truth that lengthy interrogations brought out of daylight is appalling and shows the deepest abysses of human error and decay. A lover had helped Tamara stab the first man and burn his body. Denz's wide husband reached the same fate, but this time it was another venerable lover of Tamaras who helped her with the nefarious murder.

Various circumstances have led the Athenians to assume with certainty that Tamara has committed more murders.

In the apartment of the beautiful Russian woman there were a lot of pictures of saints, crucifixes and consecrated relics, but suspects appear the finds of various mystical amulets and medals, which were previously only found in the possession of members of secret religious sect. It is remarkable that Tamara could persuade both Chinese to renounce their religion.

Many believe that the Russian woman killed in a sudden rage, others claim that Tamara deliberately murdered her two husbands in religious madness. Which of the two options applies will only be clear from the further investigation of the Criminal Hall, which keeps all of Athens and Greece in suspense.

FULL TEXT (Translated from German): Greece, otherwise not too rich in interesting criminal monkeys, has been in such a state of excitement over the past few days. Two murders have been discovered and, based on the circumstances, it cannot be ruled out that the judicial investigation will reveal a number of others. The sad heroine of these tragedies called Tamara is not Greek, but one of the many Russian women who had to take advantage of Greece's hospitality during or after the war. According to the findings so far, she is a very educated woman who speaks several languages and travels in the most distinguished circles of the city.

But like so many of her countrymen, she seems to belong to a sect that replaces religious belief with superstition, a cult with mystical rites. It is considered one of the basic principles of this sect, which Rasputin himself was also known to hold, that the path leads to bliss is to indulge in sins and offenses. Sin for these people means liberation and purification. In any case, it already emerges with certainty that the Tamara is hysterical and degenerate and that she uniquely combines eroticism and superstition in her person.

It is not yet possible to decide whether Tamara, as many believe, killed premeditatedly, or did so in a sudden rage. Three years ago, she married a Chinese merchant based here. But after a short time, the man disappeared without a trace. When asked about her husband's whereabouts, she replied that he had left her and returned to his home.

She tried to prove credibly that her husband had passed away and was finally able to marry again. Again, the new husband was Chinese. Yet the new honeymoon didn't last long. The second man also disappeared, never to be seen again. Probably there would have been a third and maybe a fourth marriage, if it did not happen that the young woman, who was looking for trills, again fought with another Chinese man. The police's attention was now directed to the unexplained and mysterious disappearance of the two husbands. The two-time widow was arrested. A thorough interrogation revealed the terrible truth.

With the help of a lover, she had killed her first husband and burned the body. Sometime later, another lover helped her prepare the same fate for the second husband. However, the judicial authorities are convinced that these two murders now discovered are only part of the criminal activity of this woman. A large number of saints, crucifixes in various sizes, consecrated relics, but also amulets and similar things of superstition were found in her apartment. It was also found that Tamara converted the two Chinese before the wedding and made them angry with Confucius' religion. The further clarification of this affair will be followed with great excitement.

NOTE: The following Austrian report dates from December 1930 and refers to the arrest mentioned as recent and having taken place in London. The Tamara case, however, was reported in Austrian press in November 1927 and in all reports found so far the scenario took place not in London, but in Athens, Greece.

FULL TEXT (translated from German): The London police recently arrested a Russian emigrant who was responsible for the murder of two people. A third would have fallen victim to their demonic influence if this third had not sought refuge with the police.

The female bluebeard is called Tamara and lived in one of London's many hostels. The rest of the residents of this house were mostly Chinese. Tamara was the only woman and the only European blood among the exotic. The Chinese fell in love with the beautiful Russian woman.

The first one Tamara heard was a Chinese named Sen-Tschu. But soon she grew tired of him and swore another Chinese man, Li-Ku-Sen by name, eternal love – if he would murder Sen-chu. The deed was done on a joint excursion.

Soon after, Tamara became interested in a third Chinese named Ku-Wu and with that the fate of Li-Ku-Sens was sealed. He was poisoned with cyanide by your new lover of the demonic woman.

That was the last murder Tamara instigated; When Ku-Wu noticed that their love was fading, he remembered the fate of his predecessors and reported the matter to the police. At the same time, he confessed to Li-Ku-Sens's murder. So he and Tamara were arrested. London is very excited about the trial of the female bluebeard.

EXCERPT:

~ Tamara, die Gattin und Mörderinder Chinesen. ~

Man verhaftete Tamara.
