Mary Ann Hall, Serial Killer British Midwife - 1892

FULL TEXT: London, Sept. 17. – A sensation has been caused at Manchester to-day by the discovery of what appears to be a methodical system of wholesale child murder and perhaps of the murder of adults. Mary Ann Hall, a midwife, has been arrested on the charge of concealing the birth of a child. It appears that the Hall woman was about to throw the corpse of an infant into the canal when a person who saw her called the attention of the police. The Hall woman was arrested. The police searched her house and there they found a bloody trunk, which had evidently contained one or more bodies. They also found buckets of lime and jars of chemicals, sufficient for the wholesale disposal of bodies. There is no doubt that  murders have been committed at the house. The woman was arraigned by a magistrate to-day and was remanded in order to enable the police to proceed with their search for evidence.
